Go green in the sun this year

THERE seems to be no escaping the need to consider what impact our holidays are having on the environment. Even small changes could make a huge difference, so here are a few ideas for how to go green in the sun this summer.

  • TOURIST boards are showing their green credentials by encouraging Brits to holiday at home.

South West Tourism highlight summer travel ideas with eco credentials. See visitsouthwest.co.uk/feelgood for environmentally-friendly places to stay and visit.

Combine travel with treats at Trerosewill Farm in Boscastle, Cornwall. The B&B incorporates eco-friendly and locally grown products in a luxury stay. The hot tub is heated by solar panels and breakfast is organic bacon and eggs.

Two nights are from £175 per person, including champagne, chocolates, fruit, flowers and two massage treatments. See trerosewillfarm.co.uk or call 01840 250 545.

  • BOOK at Bloomfield House, near Bath, and they’ll knock 10 per cent off your room bill if you travel by bike or train.

The Grade II-listed building features local food, has virtually no waste or emissions and runs a car on veggie oil! Prices are from £70 to £140 per room, per night including full English breakfast. See ecobloomfield.com or call 01225 420 105.

IF you’re heading to Italy, Simply Travel offer Agritourismo holidays combining agriculture and tourism.

Guests stay in renovated farmhouses and their visit provides extra income for a farmer. There’s plenty to do, from cookery classes, olive oil-making, horse riding and visits to markets and beaches.

Seven nights’ B&B at La Casa di Botro in Calabria is from £389 per person, based on two sharing in May, and includes flights. Visit simplytravel.co.uk or call 0870 166 4979.

  • RESEARCH commissioned by Eurostar found taking the high-speed Eurostar to Paris and Brussels generates 10 times less carbon dioxide than taking the plane. The train also travels direct to Disneyland Paris, Lille in Northern France, and Avignon in Provence in the summer and the ski resorts in the winter.
